Chapter Ten

Niles woke me the next morning by jumping on my back and kneading my hair. I opened my eyes, saw the light seeping around the curtains, and turned to the bedside clock. I groaned, realising it was gone ten and I should have opened the shop over an hour ago. I debated closing my eyes and going back to sleep, but Niles' clawing intensified, and he caught my scalp a time or two. Knowing he wouldn't wait much longer for food, I rolled, making him jump to the side, and climbed out of bed.

With my slippers firmly on my feet and my dressing gown wrapped as tight as it could go, I headed downstairs. Before we made it to the kitchen, Niles darted ahead and pawed at the door to the snug. It was then I remembered his trip to the room last night, and I knew he wanted to tell me something.

"What is it, boy?" I asked and pushed inside.

Apothecary cabinets lined the walls, filled with jars containing too many different concoctions to note. Niles jumped on the worktable in the middle of the room and hopped to one of the cabinets. He walked along the shelf looking at all the jars before stopping and purring smugly at one. Within the blink of an eye, he’d reached out a paw and swatted it from the shelf.

I sighed and flicked my hand at the jar to stop it from smashing on the floor. It floated towards me and I reached out to catch it. "Copaiba." I read the label and furrowed my brow. Copaiba was great for soothing anxious feelings and supporting the nervous system. Unlike many essential oils, it wasn't dangerous to cats, which is why I'd used it to make the soothing potion Mrs Jenkins had asked me to deliver for her neighbour's cat. "What is it you want me to know?" I asked and absent-mindedly unscrewed the top and took a whiff.

My stomach churned as its sweet, woody scent hit me. Aaron... Aaron smelt like the oil. That's why his scent had been so familiar to me. But what did that mean? Was he wearing it? He never mentioned having a cat himself, and Mrs Jenkins said the oil was for a neighbour. My mind churned trying to make sense of the thoughts flooding through it.

"He was wearing the soothing balm I gave to Mrs Jenkins last night. That's what you wanted to tell me."

Niles gave me a superior, pointed look, and jumped down from the cabinet. I placed the bottle back on the shelf and followed him to the kitchen.

Why would Aaron be wearing the oil? Tanya had said that Abby didn't like many people. Aaron had said something similar himself. He could be wearing it to make her calm around him. But I'd noticed the scent on him at our first meeting. How could he have known Abby would be at the shop with me? I shook my head. I was jumping to conclusions. There could be any number of reasons why he was wearing the oil.
